Spain 2005 #1

Hi everyone-

I'm not really sure when the last time i wrote was, but to fulfill a few promises, here is a little update on the ongoings going on over here in Córdoba:

I have been living in an apartment with a student from UCSD and our Señora, Ana. Pretty much, i just moved in with a grandma, cause she just hangs out at home and talks to us when we're around, and makes us extravagant meals for lunch and dinner. Breakfast, on the other hand, is a strict regimen of 2 pieces of bread with jelly and juice. The nutella is usually refrigerated and is impossible to chip away with the flimsy butter knife, so its a lost cause. Her daughter lives on the floor below us and eats with us at every meal as well... and they are both really nice and helpful when we aren't able to saywhat were trying to. Lunch doesnt happen til around 3, so i am always starving afterwards, and the food-coma takes over my body quite frequently. Dinner isnt til around 10 as well... which is actually early compared to most other people i know. Spain is a really late country... i stayed out til 615AM the other day and it was like going home from a bar at 1130 back home.

School so far has been absolutely ridiculous. Ive studied a tiny bit cause we had an exam, but including that, i've probably had to put in 3 or 4 hours of outside work into my 24 units of class. No complaints coming from me though.. ive got one more quarter of engineering back at ucla that will surely be an asskicker after this. They are interesting classes; i'm taking grammar, international relations, and history of spain... all in spanish. My comprehension of the language is decent now, but my ability to respond still needs lots of work. One of the problems is that we have classes with only americans, so many of our friends are other english speakers so we dont always speak in spanish here.

I have made some spanish friends here through the friend exchange program thingy here. Chris and i have been sharing our friends, so we get to hang out with locals twice as much!!! its a lot of fun, and usually pretty helpful, but i think they will eventually get bored with our childish conversations unless we start advancing pretty soon. The other day, we explained the game ?duck duck goose? and went over the different noises that farm animals make over dinner... it was pretty exciting. As far as the other californians in my program- theyre pretty much all really nice, except for the inevitable idiots... going to school is a lot of fun, cause we get to hang out during recess. Yes, we have a 30 minute recess. I still hang out with chris a lot (ugh...) and we've become pretty good friends with these other 4 girls in the program.

During my free time here, i can be found doing... some things i guess. The city is dead during the siesta (naptime) between 2 and 530 in the afternoon, and this means that one of the best options for us is to take a siesta as well. Sometimes, ill go outside and play soccer or basketball with some friends. Honestly, moving here has made me feel like i'm 10 years old again... my mom does everything to take care of me in terms of food, chores, and talks like i'm a baby, then when i'm bored i go outside and play. Also, i probably dress like a little kid to all the people that live here. I try to go shopping sometimes, but i have been held back by the fact that i cant find my shoe size in this country... and the shoes i was backpacking with before the trip are not hacking it anymore. Once i find some that fit me, ill be able to get some clothes that i can wear with them and look a little less like a tourist... even though i'm about 7 inches taller than most guys and i have red(ish) hair. Hopefully when i return home, ill have some really sweet tight pants with v-neck shirts that would make some people question my sexuality, and make others think ive been euro-fied.

Ive travelled a bit on the weekends too... i went down to the beach town of Cádiz for a weekend, where we failed to book a room beforehand, so 6 of us ended up sleeping on the beach for one of the nights... i didnt think taking a shower in the ocean would ever feel so good after something like that. I also just went to Portugal for 5 days, and it was really nice there... 4 of us rented a car and toured around the south for a few days, and then went up to the capital, Lisbon. I was impressed with all of the places i went there, and would love to be able to spend some more time there. Also, i just got back from Gibralter... which is a little province or colony or something of Great Britain down on the south coast (i saw africa), known for being a gigantic port city, and for having lots of monkeys... sounds cool, huh?? well, i didnt get to see anything there cause i forgot my passport and had to just hang out at the border for a couple days... woohooo! Whatev, it wasnt so bad, we had a nice hotel.

Anyways, this is pretty long so far... i think ill end it here, even though theres plenty more for me to talk about. If you dont already have it, here is my contact information:

Eastern Europe 2005 #2

hey selected recipients-

the main purpose for this update is just to give you a visual on how i´ve been doing. thats chris (left), me (center), and stephen (right)... but dont hold me to that cause i sometimes get left/right wrong, and by sometimes, i mean always. also... we may or may not have bought euro-shorts and actually worn them. we did, i mean... how else are our upper thighs gonna get super tan??? and the first time we wore them, there were at least 3 different groups of women laughing at us so loud, it was as if they wanted us to know. NO MATTER WHAT WE WEAR, ITS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THESE PEOPLE!!!

anyways, other than that, there isnt a whole lot to update. we finished up our jolly time in croatia riding around on some boats going to some gorgeous islands, windsurfing, playing frisbee and lounging on beaches, and it made me wanna learn to sail, so i could do all that on my own. the whole coast of croatia was gorgeous and seemed devoid of american and british tourists, it was pretty cool to experience the strange looks for speaking english naturally and wearing shorts that arent capris or speedos for a little bit (this is also true of the places i went before this too)... i definately plan on going back, and highly suggest those of you that like to travel do the same.

i went to venice for the 3rd time, and showed chris and stephen around, but lost us in the little alleyways a couple times, so we just and to eat some gelato when our energy was wearing thin. also, im sorry to say that i was one of those idiots who lets the pigeons climb on their arms in st. mark´s square... but theyre just so cute and irresistable, those pigeons (nature´s flying rat). since then, weve been here in valencia with lindsay, amy, and michelle (some friends from LA)... hanging out at the beach, wandering around the city, shopping for short shorts, taking siestas, and such. we also went to la tomatina a couple days ago... for those of you that dont remember from last year, its the huge tomato fight in the street here in spain. again, one of the craziest things ive ever seen in my life, it leaves you feeling somewhat disgusting (i think i still have tomato in my ear), but lotsa fun regardless.

im going to cordoba, the city ill be studying in this year, tomorrow... and ill send out address and other junk then.

anyways, i should get going... keep in touch,

Eastern Europe 2005 #1

hello friends and family-

i have been travelling around for the last 3 or 4 weeks with stephen and chris, and here is a condensed version of my trip... some of you may not care to read due to jealousy (jball) or laziness but whatev. also, for those of you who dont know, im going to be studying abroad in spain for the fall semester, so come visit. also, please forgive my ungood writing, i blame the keyboard... and my poor knowledge of the english language.

right now, im in split, croatia... its pretty here, we just came into this internet cafe from wandering around a palace built in 304 AD (thats old) and before tha playing frisbee in the adriatic sea... its a rough life. we rented a car 4 days ago and drove up the coast of croatia stopping in a few very small towns on the way. we decided to stay in one, and we ended up staying in this family's apartment (thats the easiest accomodation here) with them and they were very nice. we were the first americans that they'd had there, so they were interested in hearing about our life. the daughter (a senior in high school, and had a crush on us) wanted to know all about being from california like the huge sandy beaches, surfing, if its like baywatch at all, etc.

we began our coastal journey in dubrovnik, croatia and it was ridiculously amazing. there are over 1200 islands in croatia, and we went to one of them... whats that like .002 % maybe? anyways, chris, stephen and i decided we were going to move to one of the un-inhabited (habited??) islands and have a solar powerd water evaporator, a grape terrace, a huge slide going into the adriatic sea, and of course a floating doner kebab stand with a turkish guy there to serve us 24 hours a day, because they are delicious. so far, this city is one of the most beautiful ive ever seen, the only thing is its a little too touristy for me. we are planning on going to the very island that odysseus went to when he was seduced by the sirens, but dont worry, their powers have nothing over us.

before this, i was in belgrade, serbia... where i visited nevena (my friend from high school for those of you who dont know). it was really cool to see her again, mainly because we didnt think we ever would... and the city was kinda crazy, there were signs of the wars that have been going on recently, like buildings that had been bombed out by NATO and whatnot. it was really interesting talking to some of the locals about what went on. other than that, the city looked depressing and sad in some parts cause they havent really been keeping up on its looks, but we had some delicious and delectable food and had fun walking around and talking with nevena and her friends.

before serbia, chris, stephen and i were in budapest, hungary. i am hungry right now. i forgot how to spell the hungry kind of hungry today. it still looks wrong. anyways, that city was also really cool... definately one of the top few on my all time list of cities. they call it the paris of the east (i dont know how accurate that is cause ive never been to paris), but it seemed like a romantic place i guess... lots of just cool looking streets and buildings. we were there for 5 days and had a grand ol time doing some stuff: cave spleunking, sziget (europes largest concert, we saw KORN!! YESSSS!!!), and hungarian baths- the most relaxing time youll ever have at public baths. i could imagine there would be some pretty nasty ones, so maybe thats not saying much, i guess just wait for the pictures.

and before that, we were in london for 20 hours and visited my friend cassie during our layover... tehy had a bbq in our honor (or just because), and there were some spanish folk there, and chris and i realized we were going to have a tough time when we get to spain.

before leaving the continent, we stopped in montreal for 3 days to visit my friend mary (who i met last summer while travelling) and see the city. i was really impressed with that city too, maybe because i wasnt really expecting much for some reason. but she was a very good host to us and took us all over the place... had many debates about the use of the phrase "eh?" by canadians, and they tried to convince us that they dont use it. pshhh.

i hope eveyone back home is doing well... i am running out of time here, so im gonna go but feel free to write and ill write back. also, if youd like a postcard, and i dont know your address, send it to me and ill send one. maybe.

ciao!

PS dont you hate it when people go abroad then start using the word ciao in big stupid emails like this?
PPS congrats for making it this far.

Europe 2004 #2

OMG! hey everyone!!

its been a while since ive written last... but im still in europe having a blast. i just realized today that some of you are probably still starting school already, which saddens me because i still have a few weeks before i have to go home. but anyways heres some news with me:

anyways, last i wrote was from praGUE i think.. and i finished up my time there and had a good time seeing the old city. apparently that region is the birthplace of pilsners so i had some that was really good... and i also had the original budweiser but its called budvar. its much better than the gross they make back home. anyways, we left prague and headed to munich where we were going to stay with kevin's friend petra at her dad's house. we were welcomed with a bavarian breakfast which was pretzels with mustard, beer, and weisswurst (white sausage... made from "animal parts" and its skin is made from cow stomach. they didnt tell us not to eat the skin til after we were done)... but whatever, it was fine- tasted pretty good and i didnt die so thats what counts. anyways, the first night jenn flew in and met us for the week to hang out in munich... and the first night we went to a german disco club thing... it was pretty funny cause germans dont dance much... but anyways they played lots of cheesy 80s music and i could sense some looks from people when i knew the words to girls just wanna have fun and like a prayer. anyways, through the week, we rode bikes to a lake, hiked up a mountain, saw some old castles, went to a concentration camp (dachau), toured the city, saw some live music, went swimming, and other stuff... some lady there thought i was a tv star, and i BLEW it by saying i wasnt. it was lots of fun. munich was so nice, we extended our stay from 5 days to 9... i stayed at petra's dad's house or at this giant tent hostel on the floor with a hundred other people, it was pretty interesting. on the last night i was supposed to be there, petra's mom and step dad invited us americans over to meet us, and we hung out with them. Hans kept bringing beer and shots of pear, apricot, or cherry schnopps to us... and we ended up forgetting about the time, missing our train to the hostel, meaning we´d miss our morning train to switzerland, forcing us to stay an extra day. i thought munich was awesome... thats why i stayed so long, but it seemed like it could be a good place to live, as opposed to a place thats just nice to visit.

from there, kevin and i went to interlaken, switzerland... and i think its one of the most beautiful places ive ever been. GO THERE if you are somewhat awed by yosemite or yellowstone. its known for having tons of extreme sports there... so obviously we signed up for a whole bunch. i went white water rafting, ice climbing, and canyoning. the rafting was in class 4 rapids, and was lots of fun... but didnt come near the others. canyoning is pretty much just extreme hiking... it was tons of fun, and if youve ever been to hellhole its kinda similar to that. we jumped off of cliffs into small swimming holes, slid down waterfalls that were up to 50 feet high, and repelled down cliffs on ropes. it was lots of fun too. but my favorite was the ice climbing... it was one of the most amazing physical activities ive ever done. not only are you standing below 200 feet of solid ice, but you have to use every ounce of strength to climb the face of the ice. it was very rewarding once on top, and the views were amazing from inside the glacier. i'm definately going to do that again sometime. anyways... the hostel in interlaken was very social, and we met lots of people during our 5 days there... including this canadian girl named mary who went canyoning with us. we hung out a bunch, and we were both going to italy next, so we went together.

we met marys friend vicki in milan then headed to venice, italy. the four of us were planning on renting a car and driving to rome, florence, cinqueterre, and a few other random stops in italy. venice was very nice, we only stayed one night, but ate lots of slushees and gelato. i was a little sick because i am really dumb. i got a hot chocolate in switzerland after ice climbing, and it came as a cup of milk... and so i decided to test my allergy to dairy, and yep, its still there! i was kind of battling a cold but it was ok cause i was in italy again. and i was used to trudging through it from all that ice cream i used to eat in the dorms. if only steve was here to stop me.

so we left venice in the afternoon and we had THE SMALLEST car... somehow it fit the 4 of us and all of our junk... but i think we were too much for it because halfway between venice and rome the check engine light came on. and one thing i learned here was as long as its a rental, the check engine light means absolutely nothing. anyways, we made a few stops on the way to rome... and finally got there at 3 in the morning- very disorientated. a nice and sketchy looking italian guy agreed to lead us to our hostel after we were lost in the city for about an hour... but we made it safely. it was nice to be back in rome again... i felt kinda like a tourguide for the others, but i didnt know very much (they think i did though, shh). we saw lots of the sights there that everyones seen pictures of (or just seen), so i wont bore you with those details really... you gotta see it yourself to appreciate it. it was nice spending the days in the city reading about the history and seeing the sights, then at night we just stayed up at the hostel hanging out. we left rome and headed up the coast, stopping in a small town called ortobello to swim in the mediterranean. the water was extremely clear and extremely salty, and it was a hike to get there, so the beach wasnt too crowded... it was very paradice-like, paracitic if you will. anyways, we ate dinner in the small town and then realized we were gonna have trouble getting a room, so we headed for pisa. again, our poor planning led to us getting into town real late with no idea about where we were staying... and hour of driving passed, and we finally found a hotel that was cheap.

so the next day we saw the leaning tower of pisa... oohh ahhh, wasnt that special to me, but i was in a clean looking courtyard. kevin and i wanted to punch all of the idiots who took pictures of themselves pushing the tower over or holding it up from the other side... but we didnt.

we then drove to florence for a few days... and it was really nice there still. it was just as i remembered it, and i went to soem of the exact same places where i have great memories from when i was 14. being at the top of the bell tower really reminded me of that last trip, it was cool. our first night, we walked around the city and we had 3 straight hours of very good musical street performances... hearing classical guitar, spanish pop, american oldies, and other recognizable songs. it was pretty awesome, its like that there every night. the next day consisted of wandering around and such... and the 4 of us decided to watch the sunset while sitting on a bridge over the river sharing a bottle of wine. it sounds romantic... but we forgot bottle openers and cups... so we drank wine from the bottle in public. it was really fun though, we went out to dinner afterwards then a waterfight broke out in our bedroom a bit later. a few of us fell asleep on the roof of the hostel for an hour while looking at the stars.

so from there, we went to cinqueterre on the northwest coast of italy... another extremely beautiful place. i experienced one of the best sunsets ive ever seen there, and there were soem awesome hikes through vineyards and olive tree groves overlooking sheer cliffs down to the water. apperantly, its becoming more and more touristy... and i was gonna say you should go there, but to save the serenity of the place, dont. but really go there cause its amazing.

im getting sick of writing this stuff... thats why its gotten kinda boring.

we said bye to the canadians and left cinqueterre and took a 24 hour train ride to valencia, spain... which is where i am right now. tomorrow is a giant tomato fight using 100,000 tons of tomatoes, and im gonna throw tomatoes at people. if anyone wants me to give one to kevin across the face for them, just lemme know and id be happy to.

anyways, im still alive over here, and having a blast... i hope things back home or wherever are going well. i keep hearing madonna and bon jovi over here which takes me back to some memorable car rides and nights in my living room and just brings a tear to my eyes. yep, these super long and impersonal emails are always so meaningful to you im sure... congradulations if you read down this far, i might try and post some pictures soon.

Europe 2004 #1

hey everybody

this is a big impersonal email from denmark... so it probably won't be very interesting...

anyways, i've been gone for about 2 weeks now, and i've visited new york, london, cambridge, amsterdam, and copenhagen... which is where i am right now. i'm having a really good time over here, and just thought i'd write to let some people know that i'm still alive and havent gotten lost yet. unfortunately.

anyways, in new york i stayed on the colombia university campus with spencer (after a night at kevins mom's house in new haven, CT)... and i had a good time there. we went to brooklyn to eat some hot dogs and did a few other new yorky things while in new york... imagine that. anyways, after we had our fill of that... we went to london where i met up with chris, and boy was it a joy hanging out with chris and kevin for 4 days. i dont think i've ever heard 2 people bitch at each other as much as they did... and yet, they still like each other. often times i had to mediate their arguments, but after the first day i'd just tell them to put a sock in it. anyways... the 3 of us spent a day in london wandering around looking at english things, and then went up to cambridge for 3 nights. we met some people there from ucla as well as some of their friends from different schools who were all studying abroad. it was a really nice town- all centered around the college. i played (and dominated) croquet, and we went punting-- pushing a boat with a long stick, its very sophisticated... like what i'd expect from those brits. i had a good time there, but after a while it was time to move on to amsterdam- which was interesting. kevin and i got there and stayed for 3 nights... wandering the streets, playing with the frisbee in parks, riding bikes, saw the van gogh museum... oh right, and we saw lots of prostitutes!! they actually do stand in red lights in case you didnt think it was true. i was also offered extacy and cocaine over a hundred times... it was pretty crazy doing both at the same time!!! har har. anyways... from here on im writing this from prauge in the czech republic... i wasnt able to finish before the battery died on the computer in copenhagen... WHICH IS IN DENMARK FOR SOME OF YOU WHO DONT KNOW!!! so, back to amsterdam... kevin and i rented bikes there and rode around the city a whole bunch... and i liked it much better once we got out of the red light district and away from the millions of tourists. its funny how almost every tourist avoids being a tourist by any means... but we found a nice park and watched a concert for kids for a bit, then toured the heinakin factory a bit later. after that, we took a train up to copenhagen, where we met jenn kubit and stayed with her for 5 nights i think. shes living in the international student house, but it wasnt full cause its summer, so we all got our own rooms which was pretty nice. it was a very clean city with very very very very good fransk hot dogs... i could have eaten like 20 of them everyday. even thinking of them now makes my mouth water... the genius behind the danish hotdogs are the buns-- its a bread thingy with a hole through it in the longitudinal direction-- creating a sheath for the hotdog. delicious. anyways... i spent a lot of time there relaxing and wandering the streets of the city during the day. one night, we all went to the dorms of the university of copenhagen where a bunch of the danish students were having a party... i guess they do every weekend, but this time they "got" to party with americans. we were happy to play some madonna and metallica with them to share the good times... it was fun, they were all very friendly and most seemed interested in talking to
us... often making fun of the governator or of g-dub. one strange thing is they are all older than us... danish people usuallz take a few years off after high school so i felt really young there.
after denmark, we took a train to prauge with a four hour layover in nuremburg, germany. finally... i've been able to experience the wonderful language barrier that i've been hearing about. in germany... it doesnt seem like people like to not speak german, so buying a donor kebab was a lot more difficult for me than it would have been if i knew more than 2 words in german. it also doesn't help that i look sorta german i guess-- big and mean. am i german? i dont even know. anyways, prauge is a little easier to get around, especially cause we met up with kevins friend Lucas who lives here... he took us around the city yesterday which was really nice becasue he got us used to the trams and subways here. i gotta hand it to these europeans... they've got this public transit thing down. so we saw a bunch of stuff here that you all probably dont care to hear about, but last night kevin and i saw mozart's opera Don Giovanni in the actual theater that it premiered in when it came out around 1790 or something i think? it was really cool, and we had
awesome seats too. well if you made it this far, im surprised.... this was not very interesting, but i got an email from stephen whining about how much he misses me and that he needs me to correspond with him more. so thats what i've done over here for the past 3 weeks... if youre gonna be in the area lemme know. seeya
